The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei made the headlines in 2010 for his Sunflower Seeds installation at the Tate Modern in London. It comprised 100 million porcelain "seeds", each individually hand-painted in the town of Jingdezhen by 1,600 Chinese artisans. Ai made the news again in November that year when he was placed under house arrest by Chinese police. He has a long record of political activism and exposing corruption.
