Prior to the Great Famine, there were many smaller famines. In addition the Irish suffered under the Penal Laws, referred to on this monument, where they could not own land, or a horse, and had less rights than the landlords' farm animals. After Catholic Emancipation, the number of Irish allowed to vote was reduced any two thirds, this to ensure they could not overthrow the landlords who controlled parliament.
All this while being ruled by the wealthiest empire in the world and a country that prides itself on its fairness!
