The workhouses were odious because British authorities who ran them designed them that way. Any relief given was begrudged. the starving had to prove they were destitute, food was meagre and barely edible, conditions were worse than awful, some averaged less than 22 sq. inches per person. Families were separated by age and sex. Often beds were shared by both the living and dead. Disease was rife!
