"Hollywood's Malibu Beach Party" (1933)
Image from "Vanity Fair", explanation via Vanity Fair website (click to enlarge):
"Hollywood’s Malibu Beach"
by Miguel Covarrubias
Vanity Fair, August 1933
The group scene in “Hollywood’s Malibu Beach", which got a two-page spread in Vanity Fair in August 1933, show[s] most of the busiest and most popular actors of the time on the famous beach. Malibu had by then become Hollywood’s playground by the ocean for the stars.
In Covarrubias’ “Malibu Beach" we see [among others] Edward G. Robinson, George Raft, Leslie Howard, Fredric March, Gary Cooper, Maurice Chevalier, and the actresses Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn, Helen Hayes, Claudette Colbert, and Norma Shearer.
Quote Unquote Sir sez: My personal favourites (unsurprisingly) are Greta Garbo (far right), Ernst Lubitsch (bottom right), and Kay Francis, resting with her arms up on the left. I love that Lubitsch still has a cigar in his mouth, even though he's on the beach.
