"These chairs are so common that it is normal for us not to pay attention to them. That's why I had the idea of representing them empty, with no one seated. In that respect, I feel like it has a lot of meaning. How much of our daily lives we don't appreciate because we see them as 'common', 'normal', when in fact they are so important. It has many ideas and impact on the simple", reflects Benito.
As the interview nears its end, our breakfast finally arrives. I say that we can end the interview, and he jokes: "You're hungry, right?", between laughs. The waiters serve an absurd amount of food (like us, Puerto Ricans also seem to adhere to the maxim "Eat a little more", before pushing the entire table).
Plates and more dishes of eggs with bacon, beautifully cut pieces of meat, a plate of chopped potatoes with white sauce and, to my surprise, cheese breads arrive. Benito had asked the chef to prepare them for us after I told him that we usually eat the delicacy from Minas Gerais for breakfast. With humility, he also warns: "there should be no comparison with those in Brazil, but..."
They are, yes, similar, I say, still not believing the two bowls full of cheese breads that I have in front of me. While we eat, we continue talking about Brazil: Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, feijoada, caipirinha and Brazilian music. But the time has come to say goodbye. Both he and I need to rush to the airport: our team back to Brazil. And Benito headed to Miami, where, that same night, he would receive the award for Latin Artist of the XXI Century.
