“His are the only clothes in which I am myself. He is far more than a couturier. He is a creator of personality.” - Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy shared one of the most iconic muse-designer relationships in fashion history. Their friendship endured forty years and was bound by affection, respect, and a mutual love of beauty. The two met in 1953, at a time when both parties were experiencing career highs. Audrey had completed production on her first Hollywood film and received rave reviews for her performance as Princess Anne in Roman Holiday; meanwhile, Hubert had achieved glowing praise for his debut collection in Paris. Their meeting was fated. Audrey had signed on to play the lead role in Billy Wilder’s romantic comedy, Sabrina, and Wilder insisted that Audrey’s character wear real Parisian couture for the movie—enter Hubert de Givenchy. However, when Paramount called Givenchy about dressing Ms. Hepburn, their wires were crossed, because when a young, doe-eyed Audrey appeared at Givenchy’s atelier in Paris, he was not expecting Hollywood’s latest ingenue, but the established actress, Katharine Hepburn.

“Audrey arrived in Paris that July and was greeted by a very confused staff at Givenchy. Hubert and his team were anticipating the arrival of a different Ms. Hepburn. When Gladys had reached out earlier, they assumed she meant Katharine Hepburn, the legendary stage and screen actress. They were befuddled by the appearance of the delicate stranger standing before them. Hubert remembers his first impression of Audrey on that fateful day: “[She wore] a very strange ensemble. She had on very slim pants, capri pants, with ballerina shoes, a little white T-shirt and a gondolier hat—imagine this is in Paris!—with a red ribbon across the top. And no makeup. She looked like a ballet dancer.”

Hubert gave Audrey permission to look through his previous collection to select items for her new movie. That same evening they dined at a bistro on rue de Grenelle, Hubert remembers, “Before the dinner was over I told her, ‘I’ll do anything for you.’” Over the next forty years, Givenchy designed many of Audrey’s most famous pieces both on and off screen. He would design her costumes for nine films and her clothes for special occasions, like the wedding dress she wore when she married Dr. Andrea Dotti and her memorable Oscar gowns including the one she wore when she won her first Oscar in 1954. The two became inseparable and would remain close companions until Audrey’s death in 1993.
