John with stepfather Aristotle Onassis in Paris, France. c June 1972.
“One day I’m sitting on the black bench, which is where you got sent if you were bad. I have my Nikon camera because back then, we all thought we were photographers. John comes up and he’s like, “Whoa, nice lens. You wanna trade?” And he takes off his watch and hands it to me, and I take the lens off and I hand it to him, and I slip the watch on my wrist and snap it. It’s a stainless-steel Rolex Daytona wristwatch. On the back it says “To John from Ari and Alex 10/20/1968.” Alex is Aristotle Onassis’s son. Ari gave it to John when Jackie and Ari got married. I’d never heard of Rolex.
That watch and I were friends for two years. I asked Rolex how much it would be to change the back because it gave me the creeps that it was engraved to somebody else. And they said thirty dollars. And I was like, eh, I can’t afford that.”
