Mattingly was to be part of the Apollo 13 crew but was prevented from leaving "because he had not developed measles or rubella"... He was replaced by Jack Swigert as pilot of the Apollo capsule; we know that Apollo 13 was a failure, putting the lives of the astronauts in danger. (Lovell - Haise and Swigert) Ken Mattingly was then designated as pilot of the Apollo 16 mission with John Young (commander who had already participated in Apollo 10 as Apollo pilot) and Charly Duke, the latter two set foot on the lunar soil ( 3 EVA) while Ken orbited for 3 days throughout the ground mission. Mattingly will return to space twice with STS-4 (Columbia) and STS-51-C (Discovery) (military) While John Young will carry out his 5th and 6th space missions with Columbia (STS-1 on April 12, 1981 with Robert Crippen - who later commanded Challenger several times) and STS-9 (SpaceLab) -1983. This mission will be the 6th and final mission for John Young who will have participated in the entire American space program since Mercury (twice), Apollo 10 and 16, STS-1 and STS-9.
