Bob Mackie and Ray Aghayan’s designs for Diana Ross in LADY SINGS THE BLUES [Furie, 1972] drew inspiration from a variety of sources. The design for the “Big Ben” scene’s costume was clearly influenced by Reginald Marsh’s graphite-pencil-and-fabricated-chalk-on-paper portrait “High Yaller” from 1934 [left].
