L’Wren was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and was raised in a sleepy town called Roy, about thirty minutes from the city. It is a common fact about L’Wren that she was raised by adoptive parents. Her mother, Lula, worked at the local bank, her father worked in insurance & the church. Later on, L’Wren would cite Lula’s office attire and handbags as a main source of inspiration for many of her pieces.
—— As a young girl, L’Wren was extremely ambitious. She made straight As in school and was often sewing, teaching gymnastics to the younger children in the neighborhood, and thrifting men’s blazers and pants to alter them for herself to wear. She was also involved in the church and often she assisted with bake sales and sang in the choir.
——“I was Roy's biggest thing” she would tell a magazine in 1988, “In a place where everyone knows everything about everyone, I was a kind of mysterious object that caused great curiosity.” L’Wren was after all, 6 feet tall by the age of 12. “I grew up, I grew up, I grew up and I never stopped. And the more I grew up, the smaller the house became.” Her mother would confirm the neighborhood interest saying, “of course all of the boys loved ‘Luann’”.
——
By the end of High-school, L’Wren had enrolled in Utah State, but after a second thought and a boyfriend who told her she would “never leave Roy,” she travelled to Los Angeles for a dance course and would never return to Utah. “That was the biggest mistake of his life,” she would say about her high-school boyfriend. “If there is one thing that no one will tell me, it is that I will not do or am unable to do something: it’s a challenge and I love challenges.” {sources: max magazine, 1988, Ogden Chronicle 1988, Vogue UK 2006}
