One such example of astounding Minoan architecture would be the Palace Complex of Knossos. Built in 1700 BCE, legend has it that the palace was built as a cell for a mighty and fearsome minotaur, a mythological creature comprised of a bull and human combined. King Minos, enraged by his son's death during the Panthenaic competitions, demands a yearly sacrifice of seven men and women to the beast from his own people. Thesus, son of Ageus (Athens' king), was appalled at the practice, and offered himself as a sacrifice for the minotaur, aiming to stop its reign of terror. He succeeded, but only with the help of Minos' daughter, Ariadne.
