An average movie

I already saw this movie but since it was a while ago, I was quite eager to check it out again. Unfortunately, it is one of the few slightly disappointing flicks directed by Martin Scorsese. Indeed, following his massive success with ‘Taxi Driver’, Scorsese decided to do something completely different. Indeed, this time, he had a much larger budget and he decided to make a musical. I mean, to be fair, I still think it was a decent musical and I think it was pretty cool to see such a great director tackling something so different than his usual work. Indeed, the music was really neat and De Niro was at the top of his game and he and Minelli both delivered some solid performances. Furthermore, I did like the fact that Scorsese tried to deliver something darker than your usual whimsical musical but, as a result, you end up watching Robert De Niro playing for more than 2 hours a major douchebag apparently jealous of the fact that his wife might end up being more successful than he will ever be. Seriously, you might wonder why Liza Minelli's character would stay so long with him. Anyway, to conclude, this movie was a flop, a huge blow for this director and it took him a while to recover but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Martin Scorsese’s work.
