A great classic

I already saw this movie but since it was such a long time ago, I was really eager to check it out again. Basically, it was yet another masterpiece directed by Roman Polanski, it was a success when it was released and I think it definitely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, I'm a huge fan of this flick and it is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The whole thing was so original, really unsettling and completely spellbinding from the beginning until the end. It was Polanski's first movie in America and he became right away a major director to reckon there as well. Unfortunately, the drama in his own private life would eventually prevent him to have an even bigger impact on American cinema. However, to be honest, I have to admit that this re-watch did tone down my enthusiasm for this movie though. I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood or maybe it’s the kind of movie you can really appreciate only the first time around. Indeed, this movie works much better when you keep wondering what will happen next. I guess, this time around, I was also slightly bothered by the fact that the characters were barely developed after all and they turned out to be terribly passive, almost witnessing the events happening to them. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have sometimes a difficult time with older horror flicks (for example, I believe that ‘The Exorcist’ is actually one of the most overrated movies ever made), I have a huge weak spot for this one, I think it is just spellbinding to behold and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Roman Polanski’s work.
