A classic

I already saw this movie but since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. I remember, when I was a kid, I used to be rather dismissive about this movie. Indeed, I thought it was actually pretty cheesy. However, you can say whatever you want but it is actually a genuine classic. Back then, they spent years and a fortune to get it right. Basically, Walt Disney really wanted to make the animals look realistic but he still wanted to keep the cartoony feeling at the same time which was pretty tricky. Eventually, the end result was quite gorgeous and it is to this day still one of their most beautiful productions. Furthermore, they also managed to seamlessly combine drama and humor. Also, back in those days, they were still willing to take some risks and the iconic scene involving the death of Bambi's mother must be one of the most heartbreaking animated moments ever produced. It is rather too bad that this tragic event seemed to be rather quickly forgotten and the rest of the movie with a teen-aged Bambi didn’t work as well as when he was just an infant which was just pretty much enchanting. In fact, this 3rd act was not so bad though but I think it was a mistake to squeeze these two periods in his life in a movie lasting barely 70 mins. Furthermore, this movie also introduced one of their most enduring and annoying trademarks, the talking animals. While I was re-watching it, I was also surprised by the way they represented his father. Indeed, he was basically the big boss and he was respected by everyone and all that but he also didn’t seem to be involved in taking care of his son which was intriguing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it is still pretty much a great achievement, another timeless classic from Disney, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
