It is said that A Tempestade is basically a Renato Russo solo record, lyrically speaking; and that can be understood. Although most of Legião Urbana's work has been very personal, this one goes even deeper, literally and lyrically - it's poetry.
I dare say this is in the Top 10 of most depressive albums ever recorded. Pain and tears can be felt in each track. Natália is angry and ironic, L'Avventura (tribute to the Antonioni classic) starts a journey through the deepest of human emotions that doesn't cease until the very end, a big cemitery of things that went wrong in one's life.
"No matter what they say, solitude is the plague of the century", Renato cries with his last whispers.
I believe it's a valid comparision between Renato's and Cazuza's last effort, since they were both taken by AIDS, 6 years apart. Cazuza's Burguesia, while a decent album, fails in some level, simply because Barão Vermelho's ex-vocal couldn't sing anymore. While Renato doesn't have the same voice as he used to, he's been able to sing with emotion and hasn't re-recorded anything (with the exception of the only single, A Via Láctea).
He was dead soon after A Tempestade's release, selling more than a million copies without a single concert played. This album was his farewell. "And when I'm gone, please don't cry for me". How can we not?
