Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick but since it is quite a cult-classic in France, I was quite eager to check it out. At the time, Jean-Jacques Beineix, like Luc Besson and Leo Carax, was one of the biggest hopes in French cinéma and this movie was his biggest box-office success in France (since then, he has made only movie during the last 20 years which is quite shame). This movie was also the opportunity to discover Béatrice Dalle in her acting debut and she would turn out to be one of the most interesting French actors but also one of the most troubled and messed celibrities for a couple of decades in France. So, the directing was pretty neat, I also enjoyed the performances by Jean-Hugues Anglade and Béatrice Dalle but, somehow, I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing. Sure, it was a compelling love story with some interesting characters but, at the end of the day, it was a well made but still rather standard messed-up French romance. Still, even though I’m not sure if it is really a masterpiece, it is still a pretty good flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.
