Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I have been waiting forever to see this. I loved the first one and I'm pretty sure this will be amazing as well. The cast already gives me hope and just the overall story involved. I'm just disappointed James Franco couldn't be in this one. Matt Reeves is a pretty great director with two movies I appreciated under his belt (Let Me In & Cloverfield). I think it's wonderful to show a lighter side to the apes and that Caesar wasn't always so evil. Caesar is powerful and amazing, but Koba is intense, brutal, and dangerous. I have to say Koba is definitely one of my favorite characters in this one. The soundtrack was really good especially whenever the scenes are intense. There are some great cinematic sequences especially the battle scenes. I was certainly not expecting things to go the way they did. One of the coolest looking sequences had to be the rotating turret where you can see the battle raging on around it. This is definitely more brutal and intense than the first one in my opinion. The first half was alright, but that second half was just relentless. I loved the characters although it seemed the apes were more dimensional than most of the human characters. Kodi Smit McPhee and Keri Russell were just sort of there with no real purpose other than to add to Jason Clarke's character. The only other human character with any depth was Gary Oldman's Dreyfus. This dealt a lot with the idea of family and that's not limited to withing each species, but it expands it to meaning apes and humans too. In depth this is actually a very emotional and thought provoking film. I have to say this really kept my eyes glued to the screen. The CGI is just so spectacular that at times the apes looked so realistic. It was amazing to be able to see their humanistic expressions. The last shot was perfect. I have to say this was more amazing than I was expecting. I want more please bring out the next one already which should just go ahead and be named War of the Planet of the Apes!
