Assassin's Creed is a Triumph

"Assassin's Creed" has one of the biggest surprises in gaming history. It ranks up with the discovery of the real star of "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty". The moment you boot up the game, you're treated to a very sci-fi setting. It's not something one would expect after the very public (and misleading) marketing campaign by Ubi Soft. Regardless, the game's mythology is quite fascinating, but even more stunning is the exquistely detailed open-world, which is a truimph in modern game design. If only the sturdy gameplay was less repetitive. "Assassin's Creed" can be described as an open-world "Prince of Persia" with "Metal Gear Solid"-like stealth tactics. Adventure fans will also see shades of "Shadow of the Colossus" and GTA.

One of the best aspects of "Assassin's Creed" is the free-flowing movement of the assassin hero Altair. Running and jumping over rooftops feels smooth and natural. As does the ability to climb steep buildings. The sword-swinging combat is time-based and great. It gets better as you progress and unlock abilities. And the cinematic kills never get old. However, as much as I love exploring the districts and swordfights, it does get repetitive due to the lack of variety. Each district has the same seven missions. Additionally, finding all the hidden flags doesn't unlock anything, ultimately deeming the task pointless. Nevertheless, the game is a visual marvel and a great joy to play in small intervals. The player is basically playing Robin Hood in the Crusades era. However, the actor who voices Altair gives him an American accent. While he isn't the caricature that appeared as the Prince in "Prince of Persia: Warrior Within", his performance pales in comparison to the rest of the cast.

It's a shame there's lots to see and little to do in the world of "Assassin's Creed". The lack of variety is what kills it from being a truly great game. Yet, what's in the game truly shines. Whether you're being chased by guards, engaged in a swordfight or stealth-killing a target "Hitman"-style, "Assassin's Creed" proves to be a good time. And I still give it a 10.
