An average movie

With ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, even though almost no one saw it when it was released, we pretty much all agreed afterwards that it was a great flick. The next time around, Frank Darabont made ‘The Green Mile’, another Stephen King tale, and this time, not only it was a critical success but also a smash hit at the box-office. So, you would think that at this point Darabont's career would be launch for good but, then, he made this flick starring Jim Carrey. Once again, it was barely seen when released but, this time, it didn’t get much love from the critics either. I mean, there was a (rather small) club of people like Roger Ebert who really liked it but the majority didn’t care much for the whole thing. To be honest, it is not a bad movie at all, the directing is solid, Jim Carrey is always compelling in more dramatic roles and you could feel that there was some ambition behind this project. Still, somehow, the story was not really fascinating, the characters were too bland and I had a hard time to care about the whole thing. To conclude, even though it is a failure, it remains an intriguing picture and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Frank Darabont’s work.
