Honestly, I was very young when I watched this flick but back then, I thought it was pretty good. Maybe I should re-watch it to make up my mind for good. Anyway, it is basically a solid biography, even though I’m not an expert on Tina Turner’s life. I mean, this woman is definitely an icon and she definitely deserved such a movie to tell her story. Of course, the biggest asset in this flick was the performance by Angela Bassett who would be nominated for an Academy award for her work. Eventually, it would probably be a most memorable performance but it’s too bad she gets only supporting parts nowadays but Hollywood is pretty ruthless on women above the 40’s. Laurence Fisburne was also pretty good and was also nominated for Academy award, even though his part as Ike Turner was rather thankless in my opinion. Basically, that’s the main issue with this flick. I mean, the music was good, the actors were fine but it just followed the formula without taking any chances and that was rather disappointing. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was pretty good and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
