Singin' In The Rain is without a single doubt one of the most beautiful, delightful and funniest musicals that have ever been put to screen in the history of cinema. The reason for this is because the whole story in general is all of those things and it is a story that can touch people's hearts in many different ways. To be perfectly honest, Singin' In The Rain is a musical that is rather odd in some ways because when there are scenes where the actors are singing on stages and in fantasy songs it sort of feels a bit like watching a music concert. It is a film that is a classic and is the best musical of the 1950s without a single doubt. It is inspiring because it is about love, friendship and trying to fulfill your dreams and ambitions. It is a deeply lovable story that I could definitely watch quite regularly. Where I mean that it's funny is that Lina Lamont's voice is obviously funny but it can also be pretty annoying but still in a funny way. Also, the slapstick the characters pull off in the songs they sing especially "Make 'Em Laugh". My favourite song is obviously the classic song "Singin' In The Rain" and is also one of my favourite songs of all time.
It had a really good cast and all of the performances from all actors were absolutely fantastic and hilarious. First of all, Gene Kelly's performance as Don Lockwood was really good. In films like this, Kelly acts a lot like Dick Van Dyke in films like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He has that delightful, charming and excellent singing voice which Dick Van Dyke had in those days too. Don Lockwood is a silent film star and is a famous celebrity which in my mind is almost a perfect choice for a Gene Kelly character. Donald O'Connor made me laugh a lot as well especially in that "Make 'Em Laugh" song when he was throwing himself around while singing at the same time. Jean Hagen was probably the funniest out of the whole cast because she obviously had that squeaky voice for that character and she always acts this irresitable, talented and young singer and actress. Her bad singing pays off against her when they ask her to sing. Debbie Reynolds was awesome as well as Kathy Selden. As Don and Kathy work together to help Lina with her singing they slowly gradually fall in love and their comes the romance within this masterpiece as well as the delightful music, the comedy and even the slight drama within.
Gene Kelly actually surprised me as co-director of Singin' In The Rain because he was a man who I don't think really seemed that directing type but after I saw Singin' In The Rain I was wrong and he did an amazing job. He made this film a real delight for whole family and for children at almost any age. I am unsure who wrote the songs but if Gene Kelly did then it would have become a fine achievement for him and he would have become a great song writer as well as singer and actor.
Singin' In The Rain has proved itself to be one of the best musicals of all time as well as in my opinion one of the best family films of all time too. Singin' In The Rian is my favourite musical of the 1950s therefore it's my fifth favourite musical after Sweeney Todd, Grease, The Sound Of Music and Beauty And The Beast. Singin' In The Rain is a beautiful, heartfelt and electrifying film that is just too amazing to not hate. Masterpiece!! A classic that always has been a classic and always will be a classic!
