I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Since I'm a huge fan of 'The Nightmare before Christmas', I definitely had some high expectations the first time I saw the damned thing but, eventually, sure, it was a decent watch but not really much more than that after all. Well, with this rewatch, I was actually surprised by how little I actually remembered it which is usually not a good sign. I mean, the whole thing did look really good, no doubt about it, there was absolutely nothing wrong about the stop-motion animation (Iโm not surprised that Laika was involved). Unfortunately, while I loved the story in 'The Nightmare before Christmas', in this case, it felt rather half-baked after all. Apparently, it was based on some folk tale and I have to admit that it did have some potential but, in my opinion, they struggled to adapt it into a full-length feature like this one. I mean, to get the story started, while rehearsing his wedding vows in some random woods, Victor actually did end up getting married by accident with some dead woman but this setup really felt too clunky. Furthermore, while Halloween Town in 'The Nightmare before Christmas' was fascinating, in this case, this underworld felt rather underwhelming. Same thing with the characters, sure, they looked fine but I didn't care much for any of them. Another issue was that it was basically about a love triangle but, eventually, they didnโt do anything really interesting with this and, instead, Victor keeps awkwardly switching between Victoria and Emily. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was still a solid stop-motion feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Tim Burton's work.
