Mother Mary review

An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but, since it was directed by David Lowery and since it was available on Amazon Prime, I thought I might as well check it out. I have noticed that it was pretty much a flop when it was released, I have to admit that I didn’t know at all what it was about before watching this movie and, to be honest, I was actually expecting something completely different. Indeed, after watching ‘The Green Knight’ and ‘Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love’, in combination with the title and poster, for some reason, I was expecting something again in this genre but this movie obviously had nothing to do with all that after all. I guess it was fairly frustrating for many viewers that, even though we spend quite lot of time with Mother Mary and Sam, we learn actually very little about them after all, especially about their past when they were friends, maybe even lovers. With the other actors, it was actually even worse. Hunter Schafer seemed completely wasted here, I didn’t even recognize Jessica Brown Findlay, I didn’t even notice that Alba Baptista was involved (I was not really familiar with her though), I did notice Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s statuesque daughter, but she barely had any dialogue whatsoever. Concerning FKA twigs, at least, she did get one fairly spectacular scene. And, yet, even though I usually prefer to really get to know the characters I’m dealing with, this approach didn’t bother me at all here, in the contrary. It mostly had to do with the fact that Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel both gave such strong performances here. It was even more impressive concerning the fact that their characters were both barely developed at all. What I also loved was that the popstar created for this movie was one of the most, if not the most, convincing one I have seen in a movie like this one. Indeed, everything with this artist, going from the songs, the singing, the dancing, the magnificent elaborate costumes, even the freaking halos was just so completely top-notch, it felt like Anne Hathaway could stop right away as an actress and convert herself as a singer and she would be really quite successful. Unfortunately, even though this movie was actually working fine for me so far, they kind of lost me towards the end with the whole ghost thing. I mean, it was visually pretty neat and it was actually even quite evocative but this movie was already pretty opaque, I think it was a mistake to had also such paranormal elements. Anyway, In spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch, no doubt about it.
