Review of Digger

Hollywood clearly loved making this movie, far more than audiences seemed to enjoy watching it.

The film centers on an aging white capitalist, an oil baron no less, who spends his time caring for a dying cat - suddenly realizing that his Antarctic drilling operation is causing environmental disasters. As if that message wasn't already obvious enough, POTUS eventually appears with a plan designed to manipulate public opinion and protect the interests of the powerful.

Any remaining sense of realism disappeared for me when a tree falls over and a giant human hand suddenly emerges from nowhere to stand it back up. At that moment, the movie went completely off the rails and never recovered.

Perhaps even more entertaining than the film itself was watching the reaction afterward. Following its disappointing box-office performance, a wave of glowing 9- and 10-star reviews seemed to appear overnight, many insisting that audiences simply "didn't understand" the artistic genius behind this supposed masterpiece.

Sometimes a movie just doesn't connect with viewers, and that's okay. Not every expensive project succeeds. Rather than trying to convince audiences that they missed the point, it might be better to accept the failure and focus on creating films that people are actually willing to pay to see.
