Like everybody else, I kept hearing about AI on a daily basis so I thought it would be interesting to watch a documentary on this subject. The funny thing was that I have been working in IT support for about 20 years and, I have to confess, I still didn’t use AI at all in my work when, in fact, almost 1000 of my colleagues were already working with Claude. Anyway, it was pretty neat to see a documentary more or less laying out the current situation with this worldwide phenomenon which will probably change our lives completely. I did appreciate that the guy behind this movie was not in IT at all so they explained in really plain words what AI was actually about but, at the end of the day, it was all pretty straightforward. Indeed, from the very beginning, computers were basically huge calculators who were at first really super slow and not very bright and, now, we were reaching the point when these computers, through AI, will be probably smarter, much smarter, than we are. This thought, as displayed by this movie, will create some massive existentialist dread for many of us. Indeed, even though human-beings were never really bright, they were always the smartest beings on this planet but, with the rise of AI, in a few years, it won’t be the case anymore. As a result, some thought that we were going to our doom and some others thought it will be a prosperous Golden age for all of us but the interesting thing was that, right now, nobody really knows what’s going to happen but it’s pretty obvious that everything is going to change. It was also surprising but actually pretty cool that the 3 top figures of the 5 biggest AI companies would agree to be interviewed. However, even though they seemed to have the best intentions, at the end of the day, the only drive for these companies is and will be to make some money and that, essentially, will be the main drive as well for the coming wave of AI. Indeed, the most disadvantaged people will get close to zero benefit and the people at the top and their friends will gain most out of it. Eventually, just like the inventions of the fire, the nuclear fusion and the internet didn’t obliterate our world, I don’t think AI will kill us all either. Rich people will get richer, poor people will keep suffering, some jobs will completely disappear and some new jobs linked to AI will emerge, that’s it. It’s clear that it won’t be used to make the world a better place like some of these talking faces argued in this documentary. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was maybe not really mind-blowing, I thought it was a decent watch though.
