A good movie

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I wasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure. Indeed, it featured one of the most beautiful love stories I have seen in a very long time, if not ever. I have to admit that I was slightly worried when the main character suddenly got to see his deceased parents as I usually don’t care at all about such gimmicks. Fortunately, it actually did work here after all. Eventually, I think it was a movie about loneliness, how the most of us are actually broken inside and how we struggle to deal with this. In spite our seemingly comfortable lives, our fancy trinkets, our tech stuff, eventually, most of us end up in such lonely apartments, looking down at other people from a distance. In this case, there was this extra layer of being gay. Indeed, even though we did make some progress in this area, being homosexual is still hardly a picnic though. The whole process of ‘coming out’ is still such a life shattering experience, even if you grow up in a tolerant and loving environment. It’s mostly because we are still wired in a certain way and we still (mostly) follow some rather rigid conservative family values. In this case, it was pretty obvious that these two men did struggle with their identity during their whole lives and, even though Adam denied it, his mother was right when she said that he had a very lonely life, not because he was gay but because that’s how we treat people who are different. I also loved Andrew Scott’s and Paul Mescal’s performances here and I’m not surprised that their respective careers pretty much exploded after this movie came out. Eventually, the only thing that didn’t really work for me and even slightly ruined the whole thing for me was the revelation that Harry was actually dead all along during their relationship. Not only it gave me sense of ‘déja vu’ as it reminded me of ‘The Sixth Sense’ (probably one of the most overrated movies ever made) but, above all, in my opinion, it was unnecessary cruel. At the end of the day, the only connections Adam had was with some shadows and ghosts which was terribly sad and I was wondering where he would go from there. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t turn out to be a slam dunk, it wasn’t far from it though and I really liked this movie, no doubt about it.
