An average movie

I wasn’t expecting much from this movie since it was a flop when it was released but since I always had a weak spot for Science-Fiction, I still wanted to check it out. Eventually, I must admit it, I actually enjoyed many things about this flick. Indeed, I thought it looked nice. I mean, sure, it wasn't a very original vision of the future but it looked convincing. I also enjoyed the tone which was really dark and satiric. Finally, there was a decent cast (Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber, Carice van Houten, RZA, John Leguizamo) and they all delivered some pretty good performances, especially Law, Whitaker and Schreiber. Still, even though the whole concept was rather interesting, the end result was still not really satisfying. The biggest issue was, in my opinion, that the story went along for way too long and after a while and it kind of lost its edge. Furthermore, they shouldn’t have added all those twists. Finally, I thought that the romantic intrigues (indeed, they were 2 of those…) were both poorly developed and they dragged the story down. I mean, basically, Carice van Houten, the best Dutch actress nowadays, had a very thankless job and she only looked pissed during the couple scenes that she showed up, that’s it. Still, in spite of its flaws, it remains a decent and entertaining SF flick and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
