An average movie

I wasn’t really interested in this movie but Nick, my stepson, was really eager to check it out so we still ended up watching it in the movie theatre. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed after all. I mean, I have always been a huge fan of ‘The Twilight Zone’ so the concept should have appealed to me but, eventually, it never really grabbed me at all. I think they should have put more focus on how they would survive this ordeal. The first issue was that the 4 main characters were all just so boring. I won’t blame Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, they are both some solid actors and they did what they could here but the marital issues in this couple was too generic and, above all, rather tedious. In fact, I think it would have better worked if it would have been a harmonious couple. The fact that she was also dabbing into writing had so little added value and, with him, it was even worse as his main characteristic was that he was delivering pizzas on the side. However, their kids were actually even more underwhelming. For some reason, they also added some random girl to the mix (who might have been attracted to the sister? It seems that there was something there but, like pretty much everything else in this movie, it was barely developed at all) but, since she had barely impact at all, she could have been easily removed as well. I also didn’t get why the action was taking place in 1982. Sure, the director obviously grew up in the 80’s like me, I got that, but what would have been the difference if the story would have taken place today? Eventually, the only interesting thing was that the father was killed off fairly on, that was unexpected but the emotional impact of his death was unfortunately completely undone by these portals which was also a poor idea. Indeed, even though I never really cared for the concept in the first place, at least, the fact that they seemed to be doomed to find some way to survive in this prehistoric world was intriguing. However, because of these damned portals, they still managed to end up everything with some lame happy ending. At least, the CGI was pretty good and they made an effort to deliver some dinosaurs which looked different than in the Jurassic Park franchise. Anyway, to conclude, even though it turned out to be as forgettable as I expected it to be, I have to admit that it was still watchable after all.
