A good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this short but, since it was directed by David Lowery, I thought I might as well check it out. This short was apparently linked to ‘The Green Knight’ which was pretty cool (it reminded me that I should rewatch this movie at some point). The cool thing with this format is that it works so well with this director. Indeed, there is usually something so ethereal about his work and, here, he can just skip any form of introduction or any development of the characters and focus only on the fairy-tale mood instead. I also watched ‘Pioneer’ not so long ago, another short directed by Lowery which was also even more minimalistic and, once again, visually speaking, there was not much going on here. To be honest, I never got a clear idea of where they were. However, even though I had my doubt about this approach when I watched ‘Pioneer’, I didn’t think it was a real issue here though. Indeed, in this specific case, in my opinion, this lack of visual markers or references did set free the imagination of the viewer which was pretty cool. It was like the lack of details or information about these 2 characters, it made them automatically so much more intriguing than if I would have spent 2 hrs with them. There were only a few actors involved which was to be expected but there were still a couple of familiar faces. It was especially nice to see again Sylvia Hoeks. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for this Dutch actress and I was always surprised that she didn’t have a bigger career after showing up in ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (I’m actually not a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve’s sequel but Hoeks was just quite spellbinding in this movie though). However, even though Hoeks was fine here, I have to admit that I was above all quite impressed by Jackie Earle Haley who probably gave here his best performance I have seen so far. Anyway, to conclude, there was something quite mesmerizing about this short and I really enjoyed it.
