I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Elliot Page and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, it is rather jarring to see him in movies before his transition and I wonder how he feels about his work before he made this life-changing decision. In fact, he was actually the best thing in this movie though. Concerning the rest of the movie, I was intrigued by the Lu-Nico-Margo triangle, even if Nico was actually gone for most of the duration. Unfortunately, the whole baby abduction didn’t work for me. I know, it was actually the main topic/plot of this movie, I get that, but it was such a brazen action which actually never really made sense even for someone pretty chaotic and messed up like Lu. To be fair, Page was actually really solid and the way he built up this connection with this baby was actually really good. At the end of the day, for many people (including me), taking care of someone else, even if you are or especially because you are pretty messed up inside, might be actually the most fulfilling thing in the world. However, after spending one night with the baby, he should have dropped her in the lobby of the hotel and just walk away. But the way he kept the baby didn’t make sense. Indeed, it did feel forced on the characters only to create some (unfixable) drama just to make sure that there would be a story to tell. Not mentioning that it did feel completely random how he eventually ended up with this baby in the first place. I was also not entirely convinced by Margo. I’m not blaming Allison Janney, she was fine, but I thought it was weird that she completely failed to have a meaningful connection with her own son and, yet, she managed to become BFFs with Lu in just a couple of days. On the other hand, I always did feel a disconnect with my father while he did manage to have a strong connection with one of my best buddies at some point so there might have been something truthful there after all. The bottom line, as I said from the start, was that the relationship(s) between Lu-Nico-Margo was the most interesting thing in this movie and it should have been the main focus, not this rather far-fetched and depressing baby kidnapping thing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch, especially thanks to Elliot Page.
