An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Steven Soderbergh and since it was available on YouTube, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I’m glad I saw it 30 years after it was released because, if I had seen it when I was younger, I would have really struggled to connect with the damned thing. It didn’t mean that I really liked it though, it’s just that I wouldn’t have had the patience for this surreal stuff back then (it makes me think that I should check out again ‘Full Frontal’ at some point, I really hated it when I saw it in the movie theater. On the other hand, it still has a very lame reputation though). Basically, when I was watching this movie, I was thinking that it was pretty much the movie equivalent of free jazz. Well, even though I do like free jazz, I’m not a huge fan though (my father really loved this stuff and dragged me to several concerts back in the day). The scene I enjoyed the most was when Soderbergh was facing a mirror at work and was doing all these crazy faces. Damned, that was just hilarious. It was also interesting to see him acting in one of his own movies, playing the lead and even playing a double-role on top of that. I also liked the guy wearing a black t-shirt with the movie title and wearing nothing else. And, the rest, well, it was rather hit-and-miss for me. First of all, it was rather difficult to figure out what Soderbergh was trying to achieve here. The theory was that, after the success of ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’, Soderbergh had a series of box-office disappointments (especially ‘The Underneath’ which I still haven’t seen yet), so this movie was supposed to be some kind of creative reset. Well, it might have done the trick since his following directorial effort was ‘Out of Sight’, his first movie with George Clooney leading to the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ franchise. Still, like many other movies from this director, it seemed that he made it only for himself with a complete disregard of the fact that the audience might like it or not but, even though I respect and understand this approach, I’m not sure if it’s really the best way to make movies though. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was just too random for me, it was still really original and, if you are into experimental/surreal movies, it is definitely worth a look.
