An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring LaKeith Stanfield and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I have to admit that I knew pretty much nothing about Jessica Williams before watching this movie but she turned out to be quite gorgeous and so charismatic. I can’t wait to see her again in something else in the future. When I think about it, the title was actually incredibly arrogant and narcissistic and it’s a tribute to Williams that she still managed to make this character intriguing and relatable. Concerning the rest of the movie, it was not bad at all, I especially enjoyed the focus on honesty, it was quite refreshing and much more enjoyable and/or interesting than the usual gimmicks you get with this genre. I also liked how their relationship evolved from the beginning until the end, it felt very organic and much more natural than what you usually get in this genre. Unfortunately, I’m afraid it was still too generic and predictable to become really remarkable though. Another issue was that, even though I did like Boone as a character, I thought Chris O'Dowd was rather miscast here. I mean, I have nothing against the guy but it seemed that Jessica James / Jessica Williams was just way out of his league. I mean, going from LaKeith Stanfield to Chris O'Dowd did seem to be like a major step-down to me. Or maybe I did identify too much with him being myself an average White guy who did date several gorgeous Black ladies in the past. There was another small detail that also bothered me. Indeed, even though Jessica James was a struggling writer with basically no financial means, she still somehow managed to fly to her sister’s baby shower. That’s actually something that always bothered me with US movies, the way people with apparently no money would take a domestic flight as if they were taking a bus. It was a small detail though. In fact, I was more bothered by the fact that she was working in something artistic which is too often the case in this genre and I wish she had an average job like the rest of us, it would have been more relatable. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
