I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Aubrey Plaza, I thought I might as well check it out. It had been years since I saw the original version from 1988 and, to be honest, I didn’t really impress me back then (in fact, after this remake, I feel like rewatching it now). The main issue I have was that the evil doll is such a silly sub-genre among horror flicks, I always found it difficult to take such movies seriously (the main exception might be ‘M3GAN’ which was the closest in the genre to actually nail it). In this case, once again, just as with the original version, the doll actually looked awful (something pointed out many times during this remake) which was rather stupid according to me. Indeed, why anybody would actually buy such an ugly doll? It didn’t make sense to me. At least, even though I thought they used a lot of CGI, they actually used mostly some practical animatronic puppets which was pretty cool. It was also a smart move to have Chucky being voiced by Mark Hamill, even though I have to confess I’m very unfamiliar with his voice-over work actually. Concerning Aubrey Plaza, even though she was not bad, I think she was rather miscast here. Indeed, she is such a fine comedic actress so, with her being involved, they went for a camp vibe but, in my opinion, it was the wrong approach. Indeed, it was already what they did with the original version and, above all, I want my horror movies to be scary, I don’t want them to go for some cheap laughs. Their statement was basically pretty much from the start that there was no way they could manage to make something truly scary with this material so they might as well go for some horror-comedy which was rather lame and disappointing. It was also a nice surprise that Brian Tyree Henry was involved but, like Plaza, he was rather miscast here for the same reasons and, even worse, he seemed to be rather wasted here. Due to some complicated rights issues and the fact that Don Macini, Chucky’s creator, was already working on a TV-series which came out in 2021, it was very difficult to come up with a sequel which never materialized after all but I don’t think I will miss it though. Anyway, to conclude, I didn’t care much for this flick but I guess it might be worth a look if you really like the genre.
