To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Georgina Verbaan, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it did seem to be a rather cheap Dutch made-for-TV feature, I don’t think it was bad at all after all. Indeed, following the ageing population in most rich countries, I think there is some unexploited potential to tell some intriguing stories on this topic and, only therefore, this movie did get some extra points from me. The other thing that I enjoyed was the cast full of old Dutch actors (I have to admit that I didn’t know any of them before watching this movie) and they were all pretty good. I was above all smitten by Gerda Havertong who was actually still so good looking in my opinion but, in fact, she was about 10 years younger than the rest of the cast. Concerning the story, well, I have to admit that it wasn’t great though. It’s pretty obvious that they tried to emulate ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest’ and it was not necessarily a bad idea but, like most Dutch productions, I’m afraid there was such an obvious lack of ambition here. Indeed, instead of digging deeper in this topic or in the characters and what they were going through mentally and emotionally, they went for some quirky tone with some cheerful soundtrack which was rather disappointing. As far as I was concerned, it didn’t ruin the whole thing for me thanks to the cast who was quite charismatic and who felt genuine but, to be honest, it wasn’t far from it. Concerning Georgina Verbaan, she was lovely as usual but, unfortunately, she seemed to be rather wasted here. Indeed, she was basically playing the Nurse Ratched role which was just so thankless and above all not interesting whatsoever. Seriously, this character was not developed at all and everything she did was just so plot-driven. To conclude, I think my rating might have been generous here, maybe because I had such low expectations, anyway, I thought it was a decent watch after all.
