An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Lupita Nyong'o (in fact, it was the only movie she made so far that I haven’t watched yet), I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the damned thing did seem to have a decent reputation, to be honest, I was actually amazed by how lame it actually turned out to be after all. Seriously, I wonder how she ended up in such a cheap looking zombie comedy from Australia. Was it really the best gig her agent could secure for her at the time? In fact, even though Nyong'o was displayed prominently on all the promotional material, she wasn’t even the main character after all which was already quite disingenuous in my opinion. Indeed, the main character was actually played by some obscure Australian actor. In fact, to be fair, Alexander England was not even so bad. However, it has been a while since I have seen such an obnoxious and unlikable main character though. Sure, I get that it was done on purpose, that it was supposed to be hilarious but, as far as I was concerned, the guy was more cringe-inducing than actually entertaining to behold. Eventually, this dude did make a 180 degrees change in his behavior during the last act supposedly redeeming himself in the process but I just didn’t buy it. Indeed, the difference between who he was at the beginning and who he was at the end was just too big a stretch for me (seriously, he even managed to get the cute teacher at the end after all). Concerning the jokes, I have to admit that Josh Gad was not bad as some oversexed unhinged children's television personality but his character was also more vile than actually really entertaining. I have also nothing against swearing in general but, it was pretty much constant with and without kids around which was, once again, supposed to be hilarious but I thought it was probably one of the laziest ways to get some cheap laughs. At least, Lupita Nyong'o didn’t disappoint and it was pretty neat how much she managed to do with this rather abysmal material. Anyway, to conclude, even if I might be in the minority, I just didn’t like the damned thing at all after all.
