It’s another movie which I had apparently for ages on my queue so it was really time to watch the damned thing. I guess it took me so long because, even though it was a Studio Ghibli production, it wasn’t actually directed by Hayao Miyazaki (he did write it though). On top of that, the fact that it was another adaptation of ‘The Borrowers’ didn’t really appeal to me either. Well, I’m glad I finally watched this movie because, eventually, it was actually not bad at all after all. Indeed, as usual with Studio Ghibli, the hand-drawn animation was top-notch and, only for that, it’s actually worth checking out this movie. I also loved the gentle soft mood, another typical Studio Ghibli trademark. Concerning the story, if you are familiar with ‘The Borrowers’, well, it was a decent take but it was still nothing really mind-blowing after all. The bottom line was that I never thought that the concept of some little people living among us was really fascinating and this take, even if it was probably the best one I have seen so far, didn’t really change my mind about this. At least, it was interesting that, at the end, even though the humans seem to be fine with these Borrowers, they still decided to move to a different place but, beside this intriguing conclusion, everything else was fairly generic and predictable. Concerning the characters, in my opinion, too often, they turn out to be rather bland in most Studio Ghibli features, but Arrietty and Sho were not bad. Above all, since there were both so lonely and isolated, it made sense that they would feel a connection. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might be a minor effort from Studio Ghibli, it was still pretty good and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
