An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by François Ozon, I still wanted to check it out. Well, even though I have seen most of his movies, I’m actually not a huge fan of Ozon’s work but his movies are usually quite intriguing. However, in this case, it turned out to be one of his rather rare fluffy directorial efforts and, to be honest, I actually had a rather hard time to really care about the damned thing. Basically, it seemed to be heavily inspired by the US screwball comedies from the 30’s which has never been a favorite genre of mine. Concerning this crime, it was pretty obvious from the start that Madeleine didn’t do it but, considering that she was there just before it happened and that she had a motive, I thought she would be really in trouble but, obviously, it wasn’t the point at all of this movie. Eventually, there was a slight feminist vibe which was not bad but it was seriously undermined by the light tone. Basically, it was not a serious movie and I get that it was by design but, as a result, I never took it too seriously either and I never invested myself in the characters and what they were going through. At least, the cast was nice, that’s for sure (Isabelle Huppert, Fabrice Luchini, Dany Boon, André Dussollier). Dany Boon was especially pretty good playing a guy with a typical accent from the south of France when he is in fact not at all from this region. Concerning Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Madeleine Verdier, I had never seen them before and they were both charismatic and they definitely seem to have some potential but, to be honest, their characters were just not interesting enough after all. At some point, I almost wish they would be in a lesbian couple, just to shake things up, because the whole thing was all just too straightforward for me. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in François Ozon’s work.
