A very good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Spike Jonze and since it was available on YouTube, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, while watching this short, I was thinking that it’s such a shame that Jonze doesn’t direct more movies. Anyway, I really enjoyed the damned thing, that’s for sure. First of all, I really appreciate it when a movie depicts some form of advanced AI which is not violent, homicidal and/or even psychotic. In this case, they displayed that the increasing self-awareness and consciousness in this immensely cute robot didn’t bring hate and rampage but actual inner peace which was just so inspiring. And of course, it was just so neat to see the sweetest love story I have seen in a long time involving 2 freaking robots. Eventually, at the end of the day, does a love story have any meaning if you don’t have to sacrifice anything to make it work? In this case, they really pushed this idea to the next level and you might wonder, even though some might argue that they would be ready to die for their loved ones, if anyone of us would have the balls (or the heart would be a better word) to do something like this. In this case, the guy didn’t have an actual heart but some wires and computer chips which made the whole situation even more priceless. Anyway, it was quite profound and heartbreaking to behold, that’s for sure. On the other hand, you could also argue that it was actually a rather toxic relationship. Indeed, she seemed to ask much more of him (directly or indirectly) than him of her and, at some point, he was constantly literally ‘fixing’ her which shouldn’t be the purpose of any romantic relationship. Finally, I think this format actually worked really well. Indeed, if you would extend it to a full length feature, you would have to provide more details about him, about her and about the world they live in which might sound appealing. However, the fact that you can keep endlessly wondering about these things without getting a clean-cut answer is even more enticing for me and actually a perfect fit for such a romantic tale. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing was borderline pitch-perfect for me and I think is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spike Jonze’s work.
