Is not my most confident 9, not because of flaws or anything, but weird things of mine, on deciding how to review a film like this, because is not a typical one. Not just the short length that is not THAT short either, but the way it chooses to tell the story.
First the most impressive to me. The cinematography is outstanding, the camera work is so claustrophobic and those colors really sucks you in and makes you part of this radiated world, ยกLike of course the world would look like that! They complement perfectly the set design, is horrible what you see and how you see it. Also the score, while there is music in some parts (that also fits very well), most of the sounds, the eerie music, is all meant to feel like sounds that come from the world, the decaying music of a dying land. All of this makes it a very powerfully atmospheric film.
The story is quite simple, but it is very brutal and realistic, a window to a nightmarish reality, is fucking depressing, really. The film is very focus on his theme and exploration of the world. The character work is not the common one with arcs and stuff, but everybody embodies something about human nature, human responses like hope and despair and philosophies about humanity and whether we are doomed from the start. They are more like vessels, destroyed by the world and stripped of big motivation and depth beyond the forces that crushes them. The profesor is the only one that gets a bit more to do. And this is my personal thing that I mention at the beginning, cause I usually want more. I don't know if I should give a film like this a 9, which is the highest number I give, when maybe it could have done more than just that. Like the novel Metro 2033, that I choose to see as a sequel to this film... And if it was 2 hours long maybe I wouldn't, and even tho is only half an hour shorter than the usual movie length, I'm gonna allow it XD
Anyway the POINT IS... Is very good and the ending is actually quite cute, well, hopeful, I mean. And the cool thing is, this shit hasn't happened to us... yet.
