An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but, since it was starring Jennifer Hoffman, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, for a Dutch romantic-comedy, I have to admit that it was not bad at all after all. In fact, the main character was not played by Hoffman but by Hannah van Lunteren, a Dutch actress I was not familiar with, and van Lunteren was really charismatic but also relatable. It was a tricky balancing act as her character was also really selfish and self-centered, even borderline unlikeable, but van Lunteren mostly nailed it. Still, I can’t say her character was really fascinating though. The other thing that bothered me was the lack of connection she seemed to have with her social circle. Sure, around this age, many people decide to have children but there is also a whole bunch of people who make other choices, it’s really not that uncommon, at least, not in most Western countries. So, when Wyne ended up at this birthday party (I have been to those in the Netherlands, trust me, it’s so boring as f*ck…), it was so obvious that she had zero connection with this crowd and they made her look like some kind of irresponsible wild party animal who should be ostracized. Eventually, even if it would not be my choice, in contrary to what this movie seemed to argue, you can have a fun and fulfilling life without having kids and without becoming a drug addict, an alcoholic and without having sex with 100’s of random people. About the characters being involved in some football team, of course, it was a gimmick and I thought they came up with this idea after the Dutch women's national football team had won the European cup but this movie was made 2 years before this victory. Basically, it was very similar to ‘All Stars’ (which was actually a pretty good movie) but, in this case, the way they got involved in football was just too random and, even more problematic, except for Wyne, Nanda and maybe Denise, none of the other players were developed whatsoever. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
