An average movie

To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise (I seriously don’t remember much about the previous movies) but, since this prequel was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. At least, with this 3rd installment, it was pretty smart to go back to the origins of this alien attack and to show how it all started. However, they did spend very little on this after all which was rather surprising. Indeed, the aliens showed up, they did their things but, then, within hours, they already figured out that they were attracted to sound. As a result, very quickly, instead of a real prequel, it became more actually a spin-off, showing pretty much exactly the same things that we already saw in the previous movies, basically, some survivors trying to not die by being so silent as possible, the only difference being that it was this taking place in a huge city like New York this time. I can imagine that it could be frustrating for some viewers that they didn’t develop more the origins and the motivations of this alien invasion but it didn’t bother me though. In fact, as long as they keep it mysterious, it is actually fairly intriguing and engaging. On top of that, I’m pretty sure that any explanation that they might ever give in the future will probably not be satisfying at all so I get that they postpone it as long as possible, even maybe forever. Concerning the characters involved, it was easily the most interesting thing about this movie. Indeed, it was a really intriguing choice to go for a terminal cancer patient as their main character and Lupita Nyong'o was really good here. It did create a strange dynamic though. Indeed, on one hand, I was rooting her to make it but, on the other hand, well, no matter if she did survive these aliens, she was going to die anyway. To compensate all this, of course, they had to add a ‘regular’ character who would then obviously survive but, fortunately, just like Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn really nailed it though. Indeed, it was actually a rather thankless role but Quinn made the most of it and I think he and Nyong'o managed to create a genuine connection between their characters. And I shouldn't forget to mention this cat who had very little added value after all and should have removed as far as I was concerned. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still fairly entertaining but I can’t say I’m really dying to see another installment in this franchise.
