To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Jason Reitman and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. At first, I thought the concept did sound really intriguing but, eventually, I wonder if I was actually the right audience for this movie. At the end of the day, I think it could be interesting but only for the people who got involved in it (Chevy Chase didn’t like it though but Chase has a douchebag reputation anyway) or for the fans of this show. However, does anyone living outside the US ever watched it? I have certainly heard about it, I have even seen some movies derived from some famous SNL sketches like ‘The Blues Brothers’ or ‘Wayne’s World’ but I have to confess that I never actually saw the damned thing. I was also not so sure about the approach. Indeed, it played in real time and displayed the last 90 mins before the show went live on the air for the very first time and, while it might have sounded great on paper, the end-result didn’t really dazzle me after all. Basically, Reitman wanted to show the increasing pressure to deliver a great show (or even delivering anything at all) but he also wanted to show everyone who might have been involved at the time (or not… Indeed, Billy Crystal showed up a couple of times but he wasn’t actually on the first episode). You even get Cindy Crawford’s daughter showing up in a non-speaking role so the damned thing was pretty random. It was also tricky to cast all these famous comedians and, while Cory Michael Smith and Matt Wood were both pretty good playing respectively Chevy Chase and John Belushi, did Dan Aykroyd really look like a stud back in those days? There was also the fact that, no matter how bad things got at the time for Lorne Michaels, you know even before the damned thing starts that it will become a success anyway so there was never much tension after all. Eventually, showing the genesis of this project, how it all got started, might have been more interesting, at least, to me. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are a fan of this legendary TV-show.
