I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Meg Ryan and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, Ryan has not been really productive these last years, you could say that she is semi-retired since it was only her 2nd movie in almost 20 years (she also directed these last 2 movies). What was bewildering in this case was that she went for a rom-com, the genre she was most known for at the height of her career and, to be honest, I think it’s rather sad as she makes it seem that it is the only thing she actually can do. She also didn’t make it easy on herself as there were only these 2 characters stuck into 1 location through the whole duration. Basically, it was some kind of spin-off of ‘When Harry Met Sally...’ during which Harry and Sally were stuck on an airport together and Harry was actually played by David Duchovny. It was therefore extremely limited which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, I actually like minimalist features, but then you need to come up with some really fascinating and complex characters and some really strong dialogues but, unfortunately, it wasn’t the case at all here. I will have to admit that Ryan and Duchovny were both quite charismatic but both their characters were the usual boring stereotypes. Indeed, she was esoteric and messy and he was more level-headed and neurotic, seriously, these stereotypes didn’t evolve at all since ‘When Harry Met Sally...’? Above all, they were rather tedious to follow and to be stuck there for almost 2 hrs in an airport with these characters was really not pleasant. To make things worse, the arc these characters was followed was so predictable and not entertaining whatsoever. Finally, Meg Ryan apparently thought it would be clever to go for some surreal depiction of an airport (you would expect much more stranded travelers during such a winter storm) but the end-result was not only ugly, above all, it did have very little added-value in my opinion. Anyway, to conclude, even if I have to admit it that it was rather harmless, it was also pretty weak and it’s probably time for Meg Ryan to finally try something else.
