I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was available on YouTube, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I did see the original version directed by John Carpenter but, to be honest, I didn’t remember much about it, except that it didn’t really impress me, even if the concept did have some potential. Well, with this remake, since it had such a lame reputation, I was expecting something truly abysmal but, probably because my expectations were so low, to be honest, I didn’t think it was so bad after all. Sure, it was still pretty weak but it was definitely not one of the worst movies I have seen. Indeed, I actually liked the soundtrack, it was pretty ominous and quite efficient (was it lifted from Carpenter’s version? I just can’t remember this movie at all..). The issue, just like with the original version, is that they really struggled to turn this fog into a convincing villain. I mean, sure, when you see this massive fog with this creepy soundtrack, it was working pretty well but, then, what do you next with this? Well, not much apparently as you keep seeing the fog come and go but they never managed to further develop the concept beyond that. Sure, there was a whole story explaining this curse but I can’t say it was really fascinating though. Concerning the cast, Maggie Grace and Selma Blair were both quite lovely back in those days but they struggled to make these characters really uninteresting. On the other hand, they were not helped by the fact that these characters were really poorly developed. Concerning Tom Welling, he was still involved in ‘Smallville’ at the time, he was pretty much at the height of his career and, even though showing up in such a horror flick was/is pretty much a rite of passage, its commercial and critical failure probably didn’t do any good to his career after all. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t turn out to be as bad as I expected, I still don’t think it is really worth a look though.
