I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I thought it was rather tricky to judge this movie after all. I mean, the end-result was definitely half-baked (Richard Benjamin is not exactly a great director so it was to be expected) but the material was actually quite intriguing. First of all, Cher was just so charismatic and gorgeous, her character was fairly complex and quite spellbinding to behold. Bob Hoskins was also a nice and surprising choice to play her love interest and they had a lot of chemistry together. It was also pretty neat to see Christina Ricci in her first part and she was already really good, even if she wasn’t given much to do after all. I also liked the fact that Cher was around 45 years old and Winona Ryder was around 20 years old so they did match the ages of their respective characters which was refreshing. Coming back on Ryder, she was pretty much at the height of her career at the time but, even though she was a perfect choice to play Cher’s daughter, she didn’t really convince me here. To be honest, I’m not sure if she should be the one to blame though. Indeed, even though it made sense that her character was confused since she was basically a teenager and because of her mother’s chaotic way of life, her fixation on religion was never properly explained and, instead, it was constantly used to get some cheap laughs which was a mistake in my opinion. The way she was narrating this story was also super annoying. At the end of the day, the main issue with this movie was the tone which was very often just too quirky and it was a rather misguided choice. At the end of the day, I can only wonder what a stronger director could have done with this material. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was a decent watch after all.
