I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a pretty good buzz about it, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, wow, it is already more than a decade since Phil Lord & Christophe Miller have released a directorial effort. On the other hand, I'm still pissed that they never got the opportunity to shoot their own Star Wars movie. Eventually, a decade later, they actually got the opportunity to deliver their own space adventure, without the heavy baggage of the Star Wars legacy, and with one of the hottest actors at work nowadays. To be honest, the concept did sound rather derivative (and, indeed, it was derivative) but, fortunately, the damned thing was well made and quite entertaining. For starters, it was one of these rare movies for which the scrambled chronology did work and definitely had some added value. Furthermore, Ryan Gosling gave here quite a one-man-show, even if I’m not sure if Ryland Grace the nerdy selfish scared school teacher was really the same guy as Ryland Grace the heroic seemingly fearless astronaut. Eventually, the best part was probably his super cute relationship with some alien who he named ‘Rocky’. Coming back on the story itself, even though Nick, my step-son, really loved it, to be honest, I have seen this so many times before. There was also one thing that bothered me and it was this constant use of borderline incomprehensible scientifical babble. Seriously, you had a Petrova line, some astrophage which was feeding on the Sun but breeding on Venus, Tau Ceti, Tau Ceti e, some xenonite, 40 Eridani, Taumoeba,.. All this was more or less explained within a split-second before they moved on to something else and, as a result, even though the story was pretty basic, I think I didn’t understand half of what the hell they were actually doing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I do have a weak spot for the genre and the damned thing was definitely worth a look.
