I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Kathryn Newton and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, the beginning was actually really clunky. Indeed, in my opinion, they struggled to combine a standard high-school story with the classic Frankenstein tale or maybe this mix was just rather misguided. The way the Creature got awakened completely randomly was also rather lame. And yet, I have to admit that the damned thing was not so bad after all. Above all, what really won me over was Kathryn Newton’s performance. I was surprised to find out that she was almost 10 years older than her character but, even so, I thought she was really convincing playing a confused lonely teenager which was even more remarkable since the story around her was so ludicrous. Later on, her character did evolve into something more punk and unhinged but, once again, Newton really nailed it and her character was constantly interesting and entertaining. Concerning Cole Sprouse, I have to admit that it was quite courageous to play a mute character who was also decaying at the same time (even though it seems that they might have succeeded in reversing this process somehow) but, to be honest, in spite his efforts, he never really managed to make his character really interesting after all. There was also the fact that the best boyfriend for her was apparently a guy who didn’t speak and who would listen to her constantly which might be funny for some but I thought it was a rather sad statement after all. I do have to admit that it was actually cool that Dr Frankenstein was for once played by a woman but I still think that the concept was rather half-baked though. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it is still worth a look, above all thanks to Kathryn Newton.
