Hamnet review

I didn’t cry but…

Spoiler alert!

I liked Hamnet, but I was not impressed. They were bits of writing that were clever even if obvious, like the visions of Agnes about two children in her deathbed and then being confused she is having three, Judith being born apparently dead, her special worry about her, death mistaking the twins that don’t look similar anymore. And the goodbye to his son in the play he was not able to say in life cause he got too late, his crying backstage along with that really cool shot of Agnes extending her hand to the Hamlet actor. I liked all that. And even if they were a couple of shots that look weird cause of framing and stuff, most of the film looks fine and I liked those long shots were the camera stays to one side and doesn’t let you see what’s happening because it hits harder that way, like when Hamnet finds Judith sick in bed.

I think the grief is done competently, but again, not impressed. It felt quite simple, not especially profound for most of it, we even skip some time. Manchester by the Sea is still king! My main problem is that I don’t really feel both Agnes and William are that strong as characters cause I don’t know them much outside of the grief. You know what I mean? The grief part is compelling, but mostly because of the interesting and heartbreaking nature of grief, not because I cared that much about their characters because they were good before or were especially interesting during. I just that I don’t see much of them outside the grief. I hoped for more of that and the beginning make me think that was gonna happen, but it didn’t materialize strongly enough. Even them getting together was kinda fast.

Same goes for the other children. The actors were all great!

I think is a fine film, not much else. But with a strong ending that almost moved me to a 7/10, but I’m a prick so…

The best part is how Agnes would be that girl you go to the movies with that is always asking you what’s happening XDDDD

She also did a Will Smith, it was hilarious. Probably the closest I got to crying.

That’s it.
