A good movie

Since we already saw ‘28 Years Later’ when it was released, Nick, my step-son, was quite eager to see this sequel as well. At least, it was neat that, for once, they didn’t make us wait for years before coming up with a follow-up. Well, eventually, I pretty much ended up with the same feeling I had with its predecessor. Sure, it was a decent watch but did I really need a whole trilogy to Danny Boyle’s classic zombie flick? Probably not. I think the most disappointing thing for me was how they handled the Jimmy’s this time around. I mean, I don’t blame Jack O'Connell, he did deliver a solid performance but what happened to the wild kung fu stuff that came out of nowhere at the end of ‘28 Years Later’? It was such a surprising curve ball at the time at the end of this film and, since I knew this sequel would focus on them, I was wondering what they would do with these seemingly wild characters. Unfortunately, Jimmy and his followers turned out to be your generic psychotic sadistic killers after all but, after watching 11 seasons of ‘The Walking Dead’ and countless other zombie flicks, I have seen such characters too many times to really care. Concerning Spike, sure, he did return but he barely had anything to do this time around. Eventually, the real wild card turned out to be Ralph Fiennes. He was already pretty good in ‘28 Years Later’ but they focused more on this character and he was so entertaining and always spellbinding to behold. It shows that, if you get some great actors to play in your horror flick, it does elevate almost automatically the general quality of the end-product. Towards the end, Fiennes went for broke with such a wild scene involving ‘The Number of the Beast’ by Iron Maiden and it was just awesome to behold. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
