An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be a really lame concept after all. In fact, I would have expected DreamWorks to come with something like this, that’s more their style. On the other hand, if you check Illumination’s track-record, they have been mostly focusing lately either on sequels or famous IPs like Super Mario so it’s not so surprising that their only original idea from the last 10 years turned out to be so underwhelming. In this case, it seems that their biggest inspiration was ‘Finding Nemo’ with this overprotective father scared of pretty much everything but, contrary to Pixar’s classic, there was no depth whatsoever here. Instead, you get a lousy road-trip during which these ducks kept meeting some colorful characters and experiencing some grand adventures in the process but it was all terribly generic. It was the same thing with the characters as they were all completely forgettable.  The only exception was this Chef who did look pretty cool but they struggled to make him a convincing villain and, at the end of the day, it didn’t make any sense that he would keep chasing these ducks. He also did remind me of my father who used to make some canard à l’orange when I was kid. The conclusion, instead of migrating back home in the spring, they would bring back some lost penguins to the South Pole, was also really idiotic and contradicted the whole point of this movie. Anyway, to conclude, even if I have to admit that it was rather harmless, it was still one of the weakest movies from Illumination so far and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you have some very young kids to entertain.
